In certain parts of the country, mud rooms are a highly efficient and functional use of space. If you live in a rural area with a wet climate, especially where it gets cold, the mud room — which is only about the size of a large pantry — provides a space for wet and often muddy outer garments to be removed and stored before entering the home, usually via the kitchen, and to be put back on before going out into the elements. Don't go knocking the mud room!
